Premixtures

Concentrated cores essential for a balanced composition of feedingstuffs.

What is a premixture?

Premixtures are not intended for the direct feeding to animals. They are very concentrated mixtures that are most often presented in the form of powders. They are designed to be mixed with plant (cereals, protein crops, fodder) or mineral feed materials by feed manufacturers or farmers that manufacture their feed on the farm, in order to obtain a complete feed or ration.

What is the composition of a premixture?

Premixtures comprise additives and raw materials that may be plant- or mineral-based and that serve as carriers.

In Europe, the additives in a premixture are all assessed and authorised for their effectiveness and safety for animals, humans and the environment. They may have different functions: technological, nutritional, sensorial, zootechnical.

Premixtures are prepared ‘à la carte’ to meet the specific requests from customers and the animals’ needs, depending notably on their species and physiological stage.

Who manufactures premixtures?

As high precision products, additive premixtures are manufactured by specialist companies with specific tools and know-how that allows them to manage micro-doses, mixture homogenisation and their technological properties for correct incorporation into the feed.

These companies also provide technical and scientific expertise and R&D to provide innovative solutions adapted to all breeding systems.

The premixture market

In France, the manufacture of premixtures represents around 157,000 tonnes, corresponding to 32,000,000 tonnes of reconstituted feed (the French feed market represents 20,000,000 tonnes).

The premixture market is strongly developed for export, with around 40% of French production exported to numerous countries.
